“There ain’t no such thing as a bad note, Just bad intentions.”
“It’s not the music, it’s the message.”
Rock and roll is from the Devil. Poppycock. The Devil inspired it. Poppycock. The Devil gave him the ability. Poppycock. The Devil gave him the gift. Poppycock.
Rock and Roll is music. Music is not bad, if it were then all music would be of the devil. From the quiet worship song to the African tribal music and so on and so forth.
“3 Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet,
praise him with the harp and lyre,
4 praise him with timbrel and dancing,
praise him with the strings and pipe,
5 praise him with the clash of cymbals,
praise him with resounding cymbals.”
“1 Sing for joy in the Lord, O you righteous ones;
Praise is becoming to the upright.
2 Give thanks to the Lord with the lyre;
Sing praises to Him with a harp of ten strings.
3 Sing to Him a new song;
Play skillfully with a shout of joy.
4 For the word of the Lord is upright,
And all His work is done in faithfulness.”
“1 Sing for joy to God our strength; Shout joyfully to the God of Jacob. 2 Raise a song, strike the timbrel, The sweet sounding lyre with the harp.”
The Bible is full of musical references. Almost everyone is about worshiping or praising the Lord. The only difference from Bible times and today is the instrument. Back then it was the lyre and the cymbals and the harp. Today it is the guitar, bass and drums oh and keyboards. Had David had the keyboard, imagine the music he could have come up with.
I have heard that some singers today have a gift from Satan. That is a lie from the same Satan. The gift that the singers have are a gift from God. It’s what they did or do with those gifts that were given to them. A singer that starts with a band that makes it big in the secular world are treated like they are from the devil even though they are not anything of the kind. They chose to use those gifts to sing about stuff that mattered to them. Then somewhere down the road, they took a different path. Maybe it was drugs or alcohol or maybe a combination of both. They squandered the gift they had been given and they floundered.
They go into a pit that they think that they can never get out of. Which is of course not true. Satan gets in there and starts saying things and suggesting things that dig the pit deeper and deeper. That is because the person believes it. They listen to the lies and fall prey to the evil one and his petty games. They start to believe their own press. They think that the gifts were not given by God but rather Satan.
Each gift is a gift from God. Each gift is specific to that person. Yes many are singers or guitarists or drummers and so on and so forth. But each is a special gift.
I can play guitar. Have been for 40 years. Am I an Eddie Van Halen or a Bob Hartman. No and I never will be. I can play the drums. Can I play like a Louie Weaver or a Neil Peart (from Rush.) Nope and I never will be able to. They have had years of training and years of practice. Does that mean my gift is any different from theirs. Nope. I can sing. Is my singing better than a John Schlitt or an Alice Cooper. Nope. They have had chances that I never had. Where I sang or played with worship teams, they made it to the stage and sang or played in front of millions of people over their entire careers. A gift is a gift and it is what you do with it.
Motley Crue and Def Leppard. Rush or Poison. Do they play devil music. No they don’t. You may not like the music they make but that’s okay. Until I was in my 40’s, I never appreciated Crue’s music and the same with the rest of them. They are a bunch of really gifted guys that took those gifts and did what they wanted to do with them. But to say those gifts are a gift from Satan is the worst lie that you can believe.
Each of their gifts are a gift from God. Theirs to use as they see fit. We sit in judgement of them and say they play devil music. That’s poppycock. Could they have used their music to praise the Lord. If they were Christians, sure but maybe they are not. They play secular rock and roll. So should we judge them for that, ummm no.
7 “Do not judge so that you will not be judged. 2 For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and [a]by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you. 3 Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?
Jesus was very plain. Judge not. It doesn’t say..”It’s okay to judge.”
“Before you criticize a man, walk a mile in his shoes!”
Is there bad music out there. Yup sure is. Do we have to listen to it. Nope. We pick and choose the music we want to listen to. I listen to a whole lot of different music. Classical, Rock, Blues, Jazz, Funk, Disco, Country, Christian Rock, Praise and Worship.
So what is the point of this little letter. Well I heard it put once that Christian Rock was of the Devil. It was the same grinding music and tones that Secular Rock uses. That is a lie of the Devil. Now am I saying all Christian Rock bands are good. Nope. I have heard my share of them that well truthfully, should have picked a different path and the Lord closed the door before they even began. But there are those Christian bands that have stayed true to their calling. They present Christ in a way that works. They bring people to the Lord. They show that you can have the loud guitars and still praise the Lord.
Music is universal. It crosses barriers, time zones, country borders. It even crosses religions to some extent. I enjoy a little Arabian music now and then. I have heard some beautiful Buddhist music. Is it all from the Devil, not on your life. So before you judge, listen. Don’t listen to a few notes. Listen to the entire song or album. Learn a little before you judge. You might learn something and gain an appreciation for something that you have never heard before! You might even come to the conclusion that a little Rock n Roll is a good thing. But some people will still disagree.
As an example I give you John Lennon’s “Imagine.”
When the song came out, people rallied against it. They said that it was a song against Christianity. It was a song against religion in general. When in fact it was nothing of the kind.
Imagine…there’s no heaven!
He didn’t say there is no heaven. He said Imagine.
Imagine…..there’s no countries!
Again He said Imagine!
But the world said that He was saying this was the way we were to go. They judged John Lennon before he was able to say what the song was about. They didn’t bother to listen past the first and second verse. In fact the song is a beautiful song that speaks of a utopia that can never exist.
“Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world…”
Can you imagine all the people living together. Not while there are so many differences in ideologies and religions. It will never happen. Music is music. Whether it be the hardest rock or the softest of worship songs. To be able to sing and play is a gift from God. Plain and simple. As I said before, it crosses borders and ideologies. It is not a gift from Satan. This kind of gift can only be given by God. For it is a beautiful thing.
